Soul Sister Portraits

It's been difficult to find any non-Michael Jackson related content since his early departure last week. However, I was able to come across the beautiful tributes of one artist to some of our beloved soul sisters. Artist Steve Lopez created marvelous paintings of Aretha Franklin, Minnie Riperton, Tina Turner, Sade, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Chaka Khan and India.Arie. Each painting features the lyrics of a particular song in the foreground. If I could afford it, I would buy all of them. A video accompanies the making of each painting. The often misunderstood and ridiculously talented Erykah Badu dropped message on her Myspace page today. It seems like Ms. Badu has abandoned the task of completing New Amerykah Pt. 2 to prepare for the birth of a child. Understandable. Right? Check out the message.

Erykah Badu Meets My Morning Jacket
It's hard to imagine an indie rock/country blues band covering Eryka Badu's tell-it-like-it-is anthem 'Tyrone.' One of Ms. Badu's favorite bands, My Morning Jacket, have been doing just that. The band has been performing 'Tyrone' on their latest tour. A few weeks ago, Ms. Badu took in the band's show in her hometown of Dallas. Obviously, Ms. Badu couldn't resist singing her song with the band. Yes, Erykah took the stage and in typical Badu fashion she killed it.

The leader of 'The Queendom' bares her soul, sharing intimate thoughts on her music, life and family.

Badu Speaks Out

It seems like some folks have pissed Ms. Badu off. The internet savvy Erykah Badu had a few choice words for fans who criticized her for having multiple 'baby daddys' after news of her latest pregnancy hit the net, Erykah is expecting her third child from producer Jay Electronica. Relationships with Andre 3000 and The D.O.C resulted in two children. Disparaging remarks were left on message boards over at OkayPlayer. Ms. Badu left a few remarks of her own:

"How Dare You Disrespect the Queendom ... and my children and my intelligence. I've never been so disgusted in all of my life. There is no other place I used to enjoy more. I post no where else. You guys have taken an all time low, tho."

"I put much time and thought into having and raising my children. I've had the honors of having 2 home births and 2 wonderful partners by my side. Every relationship I have been in was because I loved the person dearly and was dedicated to us "exclusively" for a number of years. The fathers of my children are my brothers and friends."

New Yorkers mark your calendars. This year's Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series kicks off July 14 and features performances from Patti LaBelle, The O'Jays and others. By the way, all shows are FREE!!! The concerts are held Monday nights at 7:30 pm at Wingate Field in Brooklyn.

Ms. Badu has been quite busy. The neo-soul queen plans on releasing another album.New Amerykah, Part One: 4th World War was released back in February. Part Two will be available next month, and will be accompanied by USB sticks, which will contain exclusive concert footage and commentary on the recording process. Erykah has speculated about the fall release of a "period piece", Lowdown Loretta Brown, her alter ego on stage. "I don't want to introduce too much of that right now," Badu tells Wired magazine. "I don't want Gwen Stefani stealing my shit." Why the abundance of music? Badu was given a laptop and her son introduced her to the music recording program Garageband. Badu's home practically became a recording studio, over a 4 month period she recorded close to 70 songs.

VH1 "SoulStage: Erykah Badu" will air Tuesday, February 26, 2008, at 9PM. The 30 minute set will feature Erykah performing songs "Honey" and "Solider." Ms. Badu also shares the inspiration behind such hit songs as "On and On" and "The Other Side of The Game." The entire performance plus additional footage will be shown on VH1Soul.com.
